Let’s be honest about what the mental health services can actually offer you.
Firstly, if you aren’t trying to hurt yourself or other people then forget about even trying. We’ll give you a wave and send you back to your GP. We only take the serious cases, didn’t you know.
Secondly, if you’re not psychotic then don’t bother coming. That’s the only real mental health problem, right?
Thirdly, if you’re female then get ready to be told what you’re experiencing isn’t real. Either you’re making it up for attention or you’re manipulating services for your own gain. We don’t like people being too open with us.
So what can we actually give you? What do we actually do?
Well, we can offer you lots and lots of drugs. We can slow down your brain until saliva dribbles out of your mouth and your eyelids start to droop. We can take away your dreams and turn your reality into a monotonous lie. We can wash away all your joys and replace them with a life that has no meaning.
Oh yes, we will take away your despair and the heartache that you suffer; but we will also steal the happiness and energy that made you who you once were. The world will no longer seem dark and painful; nor will the sky shine as brightly as it once did or the ocean whisper it’s loving chant in your ears. We will take away the greyness from your world but we will also take away the warmth of the sun and the passion of a live well lived. There will be nothing for you to build your world on. Nothing to dream or see.
When your world has ended in crisis we will give you 30-minute appointments that must not be breached. Oh, you’re having a panic attack right now? Well, I’m afraid we’re fully booked this afternoon but how about next Friday morning at 10am?
When your passions have ground to a halt and your life is dark with despair, when you question the very meaning of life and the hurt that you can no longer handle, we will offer a list of pre-written questions and a nice label to go on your form. Sadness is the same for everyone, right, so why bother to get stuck in the details. When you cannot find a reason to live we will offer an explanation filled with jargon and a shrug. When you face life with no one to hold your hand and no land to save you from the tide, we will stand back and watch with our telescopes and make neat little crosses on our slides.
This is the line in the sand; to cross it is to enter our world. A world filled with chemicals and identical brains, a language that you will not understand. A world that will see you as a machine that has malfunctioned and not the human being that you are.
